In mid-September we travelled about 2000 miles back and forth to the Gaspesie Peninsula in Canada (on the St. Lawrence River) in Quebec Province
During 14 days in close quarters there were only sporadic attempts at murder
First stop - Kim's house in Tuftonburough NH.
Ali and Zoe (me with cat tail in face) and Doug
Doug works on the leaking kitchen faucet, which crumbles when he takes a wrench to it
His ingenious temporary solution involved duct tape and a noodle
Finished handiwork
Doug also worked on the trash bin, with lots of unwanted help from Tenzing
More help
Annual antique "reliability" tour - all cars built before 1916. Initially, reliability tours were to show the worth of cars vs. horse & buggies.
The headlights were powered with pressurized acetylene gas generated inside this thing (made with calcium carbide + water)
Artwork by Ali Reed. I really like the use of color.
Onto the Gaspesie Peninsula! Crossing into Canada
Scenic coast
Doug on his way to climb Mont St. Albans
Gaspe
View from Mont St. Albans
Doug shows off his climbing clothes. Work with me baby!
Rocky plates
Sea cliff
Weird formation
Campsite in the Gaspe (Forillon National Park)
Pebble scrabble on the stony beach (score keeping with rocks)
Doug the Drama Queen after Bet scores big
Doug knocks over a glass of wine (some things never change)
Two headed CT monster
Miguasha National Park - lots of fossils here - Doug is blathering about some geology stuff here
Notice composite rock below
Composite - looks like concrete but it's a natural formation from the Devonian period or something like that
Purdy
Plant fossil
Fish crap fossil (my personal favorite)
Boondocking on the shores of the St. Lawrence after they told us we couldn't stay in park in the interior of the Gaspe because we had the cat with us
Bug proofing
A pair of beavers swam around and one came up within 2 feet of my chair. Doug was scared it was going to bite us
The International Appalachian Trail goes through the Gaspe and Doug hiked some of it
One of the few older houses left in the Gaspe
What probably used to be quaint seaside cottages are now manufactured homes with plastic siding
ugh
Doug in his element
Happiness is a BIG Canadian beer
Carleton in New Brunswick - gorgeous, empty campground
relaxing after a long drive
Lots of trails at Carleton
Birch growing out of a big dead tree trunk
Sunset at Carleton. It rained for the next 5 days.
High tech rain gear. Doug enjoyed being mocked by other campers in French.
Some people have absolutely no pride. We were on our way to see the film "Super Beaver" at the interpretation center somewhere in the Gaspe
Tenzing helps at Trivial Pursuit
Tenzing helps with Sudoku
Doug enjoys some French wine in Perce
Doug wanted to be king of this town. Our RV is in the background.
Scooting in Lubec, the easternmost city in the U.S. (right before the sheriff pulled us over. Fortunately we were able to talk ourselves out of arres
Maine Potato Truck. Periodically some potatoes bounced out, but fortunately went straight down (vs. through our windshield)
Road-killed potatoes (peeled via asphalt bounce)
Interesting mailbox somewhere
Cobcook campground in Maine near Dennysville on Rte. 1, one of the most beautiful campgrounds we've ever stayed at
Cobscook State Park. No one was there!
A cormorant drying its wings
A weird rubbery plant
Peruvian woman making chocolates in Lubec. Most people in town are on welfare.
Doug relaxes alongside lobster boats
Graveyard with crooked stones. Amazing how many people lived to their 70's, 80's and 90's - no fast food, car accidents etc. back then....
I liked this slogan
Blueberry Land. I liked the giant metal blueberries around the parking lot. Their slogan was "Engineered Nature." Huh?
We stopped at Birdsacre where Cordelia Stanwood (an eccentric amateur ornithologist) lived - a nature sanctuary has been established (Ellsworth ME)
Tenzing is bored on the long drive home
The end!
